Matthew Robert Bertelson

Born on Feb 2nd 1989 at 3.30pm
Weight = 5 lbs 12 oz (2041g), Length = 19 inches (48.3cm)
Mum - Alice Bertelson, age 26 at time of the birth
Dad - Nils Bertelson, age 27 at time of the birth
1st Birth - Unmedicated apart from Pitocin - 2 hours of labour

Even though ALL my labours (4) were VERY fast, I am by nature verbose at explaining things :-) so my story will not doubt end up long!!

My water actually broke at about 6.30am, but no contractions at all. I got up, went to the loo to pee, walked back in to our carpeted bedroom, sat back on the bed, then decided to get a drink; walked out of our room took 2 steps onto our tiled hallway and WHOOSH :-) talk about timing, was I ever glad it hadn't happened on the carpet!! Niagra Falls in a word (or 2!)

I was shocked as I wasn't due for another 2 weeks and had had NUMEROUS "already Mums" tell me that my due date would most likely come and go without anything happening!! But I was also quite calm, as no contractions and I assumed I had hours and hours to go anyway!!

Called the Dr, and he said to make our way to the Hospital since my water had broken - so I took a shower, shaved - all the stuff that's important to a woman (little did I know that by the time the baby is born you really don't care WHAT you look like, or even who is seeing you in Life's most dignified position!

We got to the Hospital finally at about 9am ish - I was checked - 3 cm - no contractions (some may say that I was technically in labour now as my water had broken, but I don't count labour until it's regular (and PAINFUL!) contractions for me!! I was checked again at 11am - no progress, no contractions Then my Dr came in to check on me at 1pm, said that I was ready, just needed a jump start!! So at about 1.30pm they started the Pitocin IV - ...WHAMMO !!! This is when it REALLY started!!

I started having contractions (HARD ones!!) 3 minutes apart - WOW!! The nurse checked me after an hour at 2.30pm and I was 5cm - Good progress! I managed through the contractions just fine with breathing, I knew that I would be checked an hour later roughly, so was watching the clock and thinking to myself - 18 to 22 hours of this, there's no way I can do this without pain medication!! So at 3.15pm I told the nurse that I think I wanted some Demerol So she said she would check me first - put her hand (sorry to be graphic!!) and her eyes WIDENED to HUGE saucers and she said, "Oh my Lord I just felt you go from about 6 - 10 cm right under my fingers, you don't have time for pain meds, you're about to deliver - I gotta go run and find Burigo"

That nurse ran off and my hubby and another nurse helped me up (this was So long ago!! that I was in a small labour room) and I hobbled across the hall to the one and ONLY birthing room that the Hospital had at the time, which had recently been vacated!! I had a contraction in the middle of the hallway....

About now is when the Freight Train of The Pushing Urge hit me.... "I have to push NOW" I grunted!!! "You can't push now!" my hubby said, "the baby will drop out onto the floor" "Try telling my body that!" I grunted through gritted teeth at him, wishing I had the strength, without falling over, to clock him upside the head for having even said that !! Luckily that first push didn't deliver the baby on the floor as he feared!! But it did make the baby descend completely to crowning in one contraction - my body wanted this baby OUT thank you very much!! I got into the bed in the birthing room and Burigo came flying into the room!!

After another contraction hit, I pushed and Burigo decided to do a small episiotomy - next contraction (they were much closer than 3 mins apart now) I completely pushed out the whole head. pause for the nose suction thingy - I reached down and felt his head - REALLY hairy!! I was actually half sitting up as when the next contraction hit, I pushed and watched the rest of the baby slip out "bldoop" onto the bed followed by what seemed to be gallons of fluid!!

All in all 2 hours from pitocin kick started labour to delivery!!

Piece of Cake!! :-) Except I got a terrible case of the shakes afterwards!! My legs were jittering and bouncing around all over the place!!

Now if you think THIS was fast!! check out my birth stories for my daughters
